Named after the abandoned mountain railway line that is found on the property, Passagem’s Quinta das Bandeiras is located opposite Vale Meão in the heart of the Douro Superior. This sub-region that has a long history of making some of the best wines in the world.
The 100-hectare property was bought by Quinta de la Rosa’s Bergqvist family in 2005. A joint venture with esteemed winemaker Jorge Moreira, Passagem seeks to highlight the Douro Superior’s enormous potential through expressive wines that combine the rich refined fruits of the Douro Superior with Jorge’s desire for perfect poise and freshness.
Much has changed since we purchase Quinta das Bandeiras in 2005. Originally, the property had 9 hectares under vine, we planted a further 20 hectares with the construction of new patamares on the steeper slopes, as well as vertical planted vineyards near the river. As many of the estate’s vines were replanted in 2005, they are now coming into their own. Such is the quality and potential of Bandeiras’ vines that the Passagem Grande Reserva 2009 won Essência do Vinho’s best wine in Portugal in 2017.
More recently, we have replanted the 9 hectares we inherited at higher altitude with white grapes after the successes of the Passagem Reserva Branco.
